WITHOUT THE PINK hair, Gwen Stefani could be the girl next door. Without the rock-star success, she might have settled down long ago (she still wants kids "so bad"). When she signed on at 17 as singer for big brother Eric's raw-energy band No Doubt, Stefani never dreamed she'd still be at it at 30 (Eric left in '96.) USA WEEKEND caught up with her mid-tour for the band's CD Return of Saturn.

You're always ahead of the style curve. Why'd you go pink?
It's a good color, don't you think? I'm over it now, I think.

What's next? Coral?
I don't plan it. When I got started, I was like, "How can I compete with the boys but not sweat?" At the same time, I'm a girlie-girl. I enjoy making myself up and all that stuff.

If your songs mirror reality, you were really hurt by your romantic breakup with bandmate Tony Kanal. Is it hard to relive it night after night with him standing right there?
These are things that everyone goes through; I just happen to talk about it. [It's] just 14 songs, 14 moments of my life. And I have my whole other life. I'm not giving away everything.

How does your current boyfriend [Gavin Rossdale of Bush] handle your time with Tony?
It's not an issue. Gavin is cool about that sort of stuff.

What's up with the boy bands and pop tarts that are so hot right now?
All that pop [garbage] -- to me it's like a 40-year-old man trying to figure out the perfect lyric and melody to make sure a 12-year-old girl goes out and buys the album. I feel sorry for the kids. It's so bland.

Do you see yourself entertaining people for another 10 years?
When I'm 40, maybe I really will want to get up and be 30 pounds overweight and I'll want to get out there and sing songs for people. Now, it seems like maybe one or a couple more records, and then I want a family. But you never know what's going to happen.

I arrived at the Molson Amphitheatre to find out that I had missed the Black Eyed Peas, but made it on time to see the punk rock guys of Lit do their thing on the oversized stage.

Usually opening bands aren't the highlight of the shows, but what surprised me was that Lit favoured by much of the young crowd. I walked into a rock-star atmosphere as girls were drooling over the Scott Weiland look-alike singer with his unbuttoned black shirt and his dark eyes. All in all, the foursome was very interactive with the crowd and soon left the stage making way for No Doubt.

Finally, 8:30 p.m. rolled around and the stage was being prepared for a show that I knew would kick some bootie! This would be my fourth time seeing No Doubt, so I secretly knew that they weren't going to let their fans down with a dull performance. What would be the onstage theme this time? A magical forest with a huge tree set in the middle of the stage with glowing oranges like they did for the Tragic Kingdom tour? You can't help watching their shows intently with big eyes.

The crowd waited in anticipation as smoke seeped out onto the stage and rainbow-coloured lights beamed downward. Decorating the stage was a huge image of the planet Saturn with flashing multi-coloured lights and a cosmic background. Bassist Tony Kanal and guitarist Tom Dumont sauntered through the smoky haze playing the first few notes of "X-Girlfriend" and drummer Adrian Young strutted out showing off his ass in some type of thong deal — probably belonging to Gwen Stefani.

Last, but not least, a sequined, sparkling Stefani came out singing as the fans went wild. The show took off from there and the 3,000 fans remained crazed all night.

What's so awesome about No Doubt's shows is that they really interact with their fans and get everyone involved. The positive energy and enthusiasm of the crowd made the night much more enjoyable as it turned into one big party. Everyone bobbed up and down, swaying their arms back and forth as Stefani's perfectly pitched vocals filled the venue. After an hour-and-a-half set they left the stage briefly as people pounded altogether on the chairs making a drumming sound, chanting for them to come back out and play.

"You guys are fuckin' rad," Stefani shouted as they took the stage for the encore. The latest melancholy single, "Simple Kind Of Life," was played right before the closer took way. A familiar drumbeat from Young sounded out over the speakers as everyone screamed and sang along to "Spiderwebs."

To make the finale burst with excitement, Stefani and the gang invited the Black Eyed Peas and Lit to join them on stage for a sing-along. The night ended with a bang, literally, when two little canisters shot confetti out onto the crowd. After the song came to an end all bands locked arms and paid their homage to the crowd as they bowed. And as an added treat, Kanal and Stefani jumped down into the pit to shake hands with their fans. It was a night of magic and festivity that almost everyone will remember.

SAN FRANCISCO -- It was quite a scene backstage at the X Games 2K Kickoff Bash Thursday on Piers 30-32 in San Francisco. Action sports icons Tony Hawk and Mat Hoffman and scores of celebrities and athletes joined to celebrate some of the X Games' most memorable moments from the past five years. Headlining the show was California natives No Doubt, who performed several songs from their new album "Return to Saturn." After their set, drummer Adrian Young sat down to take some of ESPN.com/EXPN.com questions about the band and what lies ahead.

Jessica: Hey, guys, I went to your concert and absolutely loved it. It was the best night of my life. How does it feel to be back in the tour scene after your break?

Adrian Young: The first show on this last summer tour was probably the most exciting show that I have had since we started touring Return to Saturn. It was Dallas and it was just really exciting. We had a great time. It's hard to keep that high after 38 shows over the summer but we are taking a break now and I'm sure it will get exciting again when we start playing Asia and Australia.

Laura, from Sweden: Are you into extreme sports?

Adrian Young: Well, I played extreme golf. It's a combination of the lowest amount of strokes and the time finished. It's not that extreme but it is slightly, I guess.

Shmelly Josie Hoppus: When is the video for Bathwater going to be done?

Adrian Young: We are going to be shooting that video at the end of August.
Sally: You have a very unique style. Who were your musical influences?

Adrian Young: Oh boy. Well, in the '70s I was a rocker kid. I listened to Hendrix, The Doors, Van Halen, Deep Purple and Foreigner. In the '80s I got rid of all that, temporarily, and got into punk, new wave and ska. Then after high school I got all my rock roots back and now I listen to both.

.Lauryn: Hey you guys, my name is Lauryn! At the Storytellers taping, what was it like playing with Eric Stefani again? I cant wait to see that. You guys are the raddest band ever. *party no doubt!*

Adrian Young: It was really exciting, but it just took so long that it started to get boring near the end. I just feel luck to be considered in that echelon of bands that actually make it to Storytellers. That is quite an achievement. We were really proud to be considered for something like that.

Dustin : What is the best thing about being in a band?

Adrian Young: The best thing about being in a band is free beer.

Briann Goin: Are there going to be more New B-sides to look forward to? Because I loved Big Distraction and Full Circle. Good luck on you tour over in Asia.

Adrian Young: We have about 10 or 12 extra songs from the last two years of recording we did during the making of Return to Saturn. We need to release a B-sides record probably.

Steven: Adrian - I love your drumming style. When did you start playing and who do you like to listen to?

Adrian Young: When I was a senior in high school, 18, I think, my parents got me a drum set for Christmas. I joined No Doubt a year and a half later.

Melissa: How did you guys get your big break? How did you get signed to Interscope? In the early days did you ever think of giving up?
Adrian Young: Before we had a record deal we were doing pretty well in Southern California. We could sell out small clubs, which is pretty good for an unsigned band. A few labels took interest but Interscope seemed most excited and would understand what we were about. We just went for it.

Tony: What are you guys working on right now? What are your tour plans?
Adrian Young: We are heading to Asia and Australia in September and October and then we are going to do smaller U.S. cities and college towns in November and December.

NYROCK Interview-No Doubt on the Success the Road, and Surviving it all-May 2000

The past couple of years have been pretty quiet for No Doubt, particularly compared with the media hype the band experienced after the release of their 1995 album Tragic Kingdom. Now, five years later, the band has released Return of Saturn. It's the fourth album for the Orange County, California ska-pop band. The three previous titles include No Doubt (1992), The Beacon Street Collection (1995) and Tragic Kingdom (1995), their biggest success to date. Return of Saturn boasts an impressive studio line-up: It was produced by Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette), recorded by Alain Johannes (Eleven, Chris Cornell) and mixed by Jack Joseph Puig (Black Crowes).
NYROCK:
Five years between albums is a long time in the music business. It can even be considered a great risk....
TONY:
We're a band that works more like a family than a band and that's one of the reasons why certain things simply take longer. Like we can't really write songs while we're on tour because too much is happening around us. Especially after the success of Tragic Kingdom, so much happened that we hardly got a minute to ourselves. It really took some time getting used to the new situation and then we kind of had to relearn being creative again.
GWEN:
After we spent two years straight on the road we were really exhausted. We're definitely a live band and we enjoy playing live. That's always been our strongest point and where we got most of our fans from. But being on the road all the time is really uncreative. It's a crazy life.
NYROCK:
Then you worked on the album for two years....
GWEN:
I don't know where the time went, it just slipped by. It really took us so long.
NYROCK:
Before the success of Tragic Kingdom you had toured a lot. But after it, you seemed to be on the road non-stop. How did you adjust?
TONY:
It wasn't so much adjusting to the life on the road; it was more difficult to adjust to not being on the road again. If you've been on the road for over two years and you come back home everything is different. Your whole surroundings are different and you need time to get used to it again. You have to get down and sort out your private stuff and all that. You just got to get used to having a home again and not waking up in a different hotel room every morning.
GWEN:
While you're on tour, you don't feel like you're a person. You have to function no matter how you feel. But if you're going to write songs, how you feel becomes important again. It's quite a switch. After we got back from the tour I got really depressed, not because I didn't want to be home again but because everything was so different and I had such a hard time getting used to it again.
NYROCK:
No Doubt have always been known for mixing many styles. There seem to be many influences affecting your new songs. Where do they come from?
GWEN:
Each of us comes from a different musical background and has a different taste of music. So sometimes it's really hard to find a mutual ground. After all, we're a band; so everybody should be happy with a song.
NYROCK:
Gwen, you wrote all the lyrics for Return of Saturn and obviously some are rather autobiographical....
GWEN:
Whenever I write lyrics I live through them. In a way they reflect a certain period in my life and I live through that period of my life again – relive the whole thing and that's pretty hard. But I want to get better. I want to write lyrics that make sense. I want to say what I feel and what I think, maybe because there are not a lot of female artists who voice what I feel. Writing lyrics is kind of like writing a diary or reading your diary and living through phases of your life again. I can only write about things I know.
NYROCK:
Are you concerned about following the success of Tragic Kingdom?
TONY:
We've always made the sound we like and if other people like it as well, it's great. But we have to like what we do. I think it's the best album we could possibly make but we have no influence on how the audience likes it. Of course, we're going to be happy if it sells, but if it doesn't sell it's not the end of the world and we can't really change it. We're really realistic about it and we already made our money. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but we don't need it to be a big success. It was an album we did for ourselves. Of course, we hope that people like it, simply because we like the album and you always want other people to appreciate something you're proud of. But the point is that it's absolutely beyond your control.
GWEN:
I agree with Tony. If Return of Saturn should flop, it won't be the end of the world for us. Of course, we'll be sad because we think it's a great album, but I don't think it would be a reason to split. We toured long enough without having a big success and we didn't get successful overnight. We're proud of our new album and that's what really counts.
NYROCK:
What's in the future for No Doubt? Is the band your future or do you have other plans?
TONY:
I love being a musician and I can't imagine that I ever want to do something else. I think it all boils down to the fact that we didn't change – success didn't change us. We're the same people we were, only older, but that's natural.
GWEN:
I don't really think about what might happen or what I might do after No Doubt. Sometimes I doubted that we'd ever record Return of Saturn. So I think every album is something like a present. We went through some rather tough times and survived as a band and we survived our success. Sometimes I really think nothing can happen to us anymore.

MUSIC: Gwen Stefani infects the crowd with her upbeat charm and energy, fully charging No Doubt's stage comeback

In the waning minutes of No Doubt's lively show, a sprightly Gwen Stefani plucked four pink hair girls from the audience and onto the stage for "Excuse Me Mr."
Stefani instructed the embarrassed pre-teens to lead the hyper crowd through the chorus but after one meek try, the girlish Stefani decided it took a woman to do a girl's job. So up she went onto a wall of speakers and proceeded to rev the sold-out Universal Amphitheater into a final frenzy of jumping bodies and pumping fists.
It was like that all night.
The charismatic Stefani beguiled the audience, with coy playfulness and swaying hips, through the hits of "Tragic Kingdom" and their newly minted "Return of Saturn" albums. It wasn't suppose to be a one-woman show but Friday evening's concert redefined that old adage: behind every strong man (in this case men) there is a stronger fuschia haired woman.
It's hard not to focus on the svelte 30-year-old Stefani; she is a pillar of infectious self-determined girl power surrounded by a trio of childish Lost Boys. That's why in a sea of 9,000 strong there was a heavy speckling of young girls with dyed primrose locks adoring their onstage idol.
For Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young, the Universal outing marks an anxious return from two years of writing and recording and the debut of a new No Doubt. Stefani stressed the importance throughout the night. And who could really blame her? After a year of disappointments from long established rock acts including STP, Beck, Oasis and Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt is the next prime target of a post-gazillion selling slump.
But they didn't disappoint. Starting the show with the "Godfather" theme, No Doubt brought an air of vaudeville hi-jinks to the stage. The band was decked out in face make-up, glitter, and kitschy '80s ska attire and burst onto stage with youthful energy usually reserved for bands half their age.
No Doubt appropriately kicked the night off with "New," the band's contribution to the "Go" soundtrack. The single was the first recorded material released by the group since "Kingdom" and offered a taste of No Doubt's more pop less ska flavor.
Whatever rust the band accumulated during the two year hiatus wasn't evident. Stefani's cutesy girlish vocals sounded fresh and vibrant, Dumont's guitar work was punchy, Kanal provided a grooving rhythm, and Young played a mean set of skins.
No Doubt's tight and energetic set was a testament to the group's longtime commitment to relentless touring.
Stefani set the frenetic pace for the night, she is a veteran of getting the crowd to do what she pleases. When the audience swooned during No Doubt's new song "Staring Problem," Stefani cajoled the audience into singing along by demurely reminding the crowd that they were at a "fucking concert" and then proceeded to execute less than perfect cartwheels from one end of the stage to the other. It was one of many charming moments provided by Stefani. Her incessant upbeat enthusiasm got the band through the hesitant reactions of their new power pop anthems of "Bathwater" and "Magic's in the Make-Up."
No Doubt keenly packed the setlist with the familiar ska-punk fusion of "Kingdom." Fans got up for favorites like the two-tone "Different People" and "Sunday Morning."
The band's big hits "Don't Speak" and the quintessential girl anthem "Just a Girl" received riotous approval.
There was little let up from the opener to the communal encore closer of "Spiderwebs." On a night of reintroduction of a band and reunion with the fans, No Doubt left little doubt concerning their staying power.

A number of journalists have speculated about this recently when we explained to them that we approached the making of "Return of Saturn" as if it were our last album. By this we meant that wanted to give it everything we had and in turn make it the best it could be. We have had no discussions within the band about hanging it up after this album. After we got home from our little tour last month we went straight back into the studio to record two songs, one called "X Girlfriend" and the other called "Magic's in the Makeup." We've finally decided on the album title, but I can't announce it just yet. We're all very impatient to get this CD out, and once we're given a definitive release date, I'll pass it on to you. Since we've recorded about 24 songs and only 13 or 14 will make it on the CD, we'll definitely have enough for a "Beacon Street Vol. 2" type of CD. -Tom Dumont

As some of you know, last week both Adrian and Tony celebrated birthdays, and Nina graciously threw a big party at Adrian's house over the weekend. Adrian's neighbors didn't complain once, and even though I got tired and left by 2am, I know that the place was raging for hours beyond that. A couple hundred close friends came by and a good time was had by all. Its always fun to drop names so here's some of the local musicians and celebrities who hung out: One Hit Wonder, 311, NOFX, Tom Morello, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Vince Vaughn, Czar, Goldfinger, Bush, Perry Farrell, Jed the Fish, Native Wayne, and last but not least, Corey Feldman.
I'm pretty sure that I got the high score on Galaga.
Also, I'm still trying to get those new photos up so thanks for your continued patience.
Oh yeah, and please watch this site carefully because in the middle of September I'm going to announce something very secret here.

We all just got home from vacation and it's back to working on those last few tunes. Our good friend webmaster Ray hooked me up with a smokin' new digital camera, and he's been working on a new feature here where I get to post new photos of the band every single day. We're starting to make tour plans and we're looking very foreword to playing live again soon. A couple of the new songs have some strange instrumentation, so we still haven't figured out how to play them live. I think Gabe (our keyboard/trombone player) has to learn how to play guitar really quick so that we can pull some of this stuff off.Being workaholics has its drawbacks. We've pretty much wrapped up our CD, and next week we'll all take our first vacations since we finished touring back at the end of '97. The funny thing is that a couple of really good new songs recently popped out, so we'll be back in the studio to cut them in mid August.-Tom Dumont.

We're in the final days of finishing our CD, and we're trying to hit a deadline of finishing all the music, mixed and mastered, by the end of this month.

Today is going to be what I call "triple threat Friday." In one studio, our mixing engineer (whose initials are 'J.J.P.') will spend the whole day mixing a song, (entitled "Too Late Now") and we'll arrive late tonight to listen to it, make suggestions, and approve of the final mix. During the day while J.J.P is working up the mix, Tony, Adrian and I will be at Alain's home studio across town recording instrumental overdubs on a super secret special song which I can't tell you about yet, called "Waiting Room". And in a third studio in another part of Hollywood, Gwen will be recording a performance of her new lyrics for another song called "You're so Foxy". Also, at some point during the day, I bet at least one of us will eat lunch at the California Chicken Cafe. At the moment we're trying for a release date of November 16th.

We're right in the middle of mixing and there are a few other things going on that may be of some interest to you:
Gwen is going into the studio today with Fishbone to record a guest vocal on a song for the upcoming "Fishbone and Friends" album.
We're beginning to make touring plans for the Fall which will coincide with the release of our next CD.
I still don't know when MTV will air our interview with Kurt Loder for the 1515 news program.
The surf in Huntington Beach is 2-4 feet and the water is 65 degrees.
New photos of us in the studio will be up on this site in a day or so.

Contrary to some rumors out there, none of us in No Doubt are planning to attend the Los Angeles Punk Rock Hall of Fame Awards in Santa Monica, Calif., on June 5.
Tomorrow we're taping an interview with Kurt Loder for the 1515 news program on MTV, but I don't know yet when it will air.
We're pretty much finished recording our forthcoming CD, and it's cool to finally feel the satisfaction of completion. Without trying to sound boastful, I'm confident that this CD will prove to be our best work yet. We could have just rushed something out last year, but I think that the extra time and effort we've put into this will be well worth the wait to everyone who's been patient with us.

If you are sick of Star Wars hype, skip this post, but otherwise here's the No Doubt-Phantom Menace story.
It started back in 1997 when we were on tour. After our show at the Shoreline Amphitheater near San Francisco, California, our tour manager came into the dressing room and said to us, "George Lucas is here with his daughter, and they'd like to me you." We were stoked about the chance to meet them, having grown up with George's stuff. Evidently his daughter and her friends were fans of No Doubt and they had all come to the show (We hoped George was surprised with our rendition of "The Imperial March" that night.) So we met them, they were all very cool, and George said, "If you're ever in London, come to the set where we're filming the Phantom Menace." Good thing we were to play in London just a few months later.
A few weeks before our shows there in London, we got word that there was to be a wrap party for the film in Paris, and we were invited to attend and perform an informal show at the party. Unfortunately, we had another show that particular night, so it couldn't happen. But we did have a day off in London just before that, and we took George Lucas up on his offer.
On that day in London they sent cars to pick us all up at our hotel, and we were driven about an hour out of town to what was once a Rolls-Royce jet engine factory, and is now a movie studio. We were shown around a carpenter's shop where guys were working on droids, and we got to walk around on various vacant stage sets. Finally we were taken to where the action was. Ewan Mac Gregor and the Darth Maul character were filming a light saber battle! We each had to put these sock things over our shoes so that we wouldn't scuff up the set, and we all climbed up into a mock spacecraft, and sat in a corner to watch them film for about thirty minutes. The light saber battle was fully choreographed and the actors were going all out as if it were real. They had to film the same sequence over and over again with the camera shooting from different viewpoints, and we enjoyed every second of it! George Lucas was totally gracious the whole time, and we felt like we got to witness a bit of movie history in the making.

I forgot to mention that we have a song on "BURNING LONDON-A CLASH TRIBUTE" CD, which should be out in stores as of yesterday. We cover the song "Hateful", and there's a secret guest back-up vocalist who's on it with us as well.
We're getting excited to be in the finishing stages of recording, and after mixing in June, we'll start gearing up to play shows again! In the 12 years we've been together as a band, this is the longest stretch of time without a live show that we've ever had.

As for our progress, we've got eleven songs recorded at this point, with seven or eight to go. There's nothing really new to post here, except to inform you that we are now in the studio recording the music that should become our new CD. I say 'should' because we've already had a bunch of false starts in this process. The bottom line is that we've pushed ourselves the extra mile writing these songs, hoping to create something special. One positive thing about having written and recorded so much music is that we'll have more than one albums worth by the time we're done, and there'll be plenty of exclusive songs for b-sides as singles are released.

Our drummer, Adrian Young, has been an avid Golfer ever since he was 14 years old. In his spare time this year, he has worked with Joe from the Vandals and Thrasher magazine to create "Schwing", an alternative golf magazine. Its on newstands now, so pick it up! I have more information on our new song entitled "New". You'll be able to find it on the soundtrack CD for the feature film "Go". The CD will hit stores on March 23, and the film will be in theatres on March 26. We filmed a video last weekend for "New", but there's no word yet on where or when you might be able to see it.Production of our forthcoming CD is finally kicking into high gear.
